Most men have a healthy libido throughout their entire lives, but they start to have erectile dysfunction (ED) as they age past 40 years. There are many ads on television promoting a range of options and solutions, and all of this information can be confusing as to what causes ED and how to treat it best. Men can get ED from many causes including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, medications and cancer treatments. ED is sometimes the first sign of heart trouble, so patients should get a cardiovascular check-up if experiencing any signs of ED, especially at a young age.

Medicines such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra all offer easy and sometimes effective ways to treat mild ED, but they are very expensive and not covered by many insurance plans. In fact, 30% of men do not get desired results or cannot afford the medication. Sometimes improving diet, exercise and habits can make the pills more effective or unneeded.

When pills aren’t the answer, urologists can offer other solutions such as a vacuum erection device (VED) that works well and lasts for an extended period of time without a great deal of expense. There are also penile injections that are not painful and relatively simple to do at home. Both of these alternatives are less expensive than pills advertised to help with ED. However, the most satisfying solution for many men is an implantable penile prosthesis that can be placed with a short outpatient surgery. Studies show a 90% satisfaction rate for the patient and a 95% satisfaction rate for their partners.

ED is a common problem, and getting the best solution is important. It can affect mood, outlook and a man’s sense of well-being in a profound way. Particularly for men with a healthy libido, ED can cause a great deal of distress. Although there is no “cure,” it can be effectively treated by working with a physician to find the right method for each individual situation.
