Special Called Budget Meeting Held

By  |

Public Participation Violations to be Corrected

Mayor Junior Shelton called a special meeting of the City Council for last night to correct the unlawful approval of his 2016-2017 City of Central budget at the June 14 Council meeting.  The Council approved the $5.7 million General Fund budget on June 14th with minor amendments, resulting in a 12% ($600,000) increase over the current year’s actual General Fund expenditures.
During public comment at the June 14th Council meeting it was pointed out that public participation requirements had not been met to allow for a vote on the budget.  After the public participation violations were reported on in the newspaper later that same week, the Shelton administration properly advertised the budget vote and scheduled last night’s called City Council meeting.
Last night’s meeting was held after Central Speaks went to press.  Mayor Shelton’s office has not issued any statements on the initial flawed vote or the efforts to correct the problem.
