Fire Department Emphasizes Importance of Smoke Alarms
From Central Fire Department
Fire departments continually stress the importance of properly installed and maintained smoke alarms. Shortly after 1:00 a.m. last Thursday morning, CFD responded to another house fire where a smoke alarm is being credited with waking a sleeping resident to the fact their home was on fire and rapidly filling with smoke. When firefighters arrived on scene, the occupant had fled the home through a front door after finding the back door blocked by advancing fire and smoke. Central firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, limiting fire damage mainly to the attached garage. Smoke and heat contributed to significant damage throughout the rest of the house. A search of the residence located two dogs and both were returned to the owner. District Six and East Side Fire Departments assisted at the scene and with station coverage.
Captain Derek Glover with CFD stated this incident proves the value of smoke alarms and he urges everyone to check their smoke alarms, have an escape plan and to always practice fire safety.
