CHS Softball Is Back

By  |

The 2013 Wildcat Softball team proved that they can come back late in any game and has done that to beat #8 ranked Walker and #12 North Shore.  In the bigger picture this team, led by seven seniors, is on pace for a season comeback that will likely land them in the playoffs.  In the biggest picture, Central High School Softball has a rich history for winning, and that winning program is back.
Tuesday the Lady Wildcats beat Scotlandville for a 16-11 record with three games left, and 8 of those 11 losses have come to teams ranked in the top 10 in the state.  Today’s game against Denham is Senior Night and then the team travels to West Feliciana and Plaquemine.  The team currently sits at #22 in the state and the top 32 make the playoffs.
This has been a significant turnaround year which Coach Edwards attributes to “…a balanced team, we go out one weekend and go 3-0 behind great pitching and defense, and the next weekend we go 2-1 because our hitters are crushing the ball.”  Coach adds “We have seven players with out-of-the-park home runs, and Katie Flowers has 11 of her own, probably among the best in the state.”
With Senior Night against Denham tonight, Coach Edwards talked about his players.  “All of our players deserve recognition, but this team certainly would not be where it is without our seniors, Madison Devall and Brittney McCarty on the mound, Katie Flowers behind the plate, Kaylan Hunt at first, Chelsea David at third, and Kelsey Courtney and Brittany Johnson in the outfield.  Also, I am technically the head coach, but the coaches truly responsible for this effort are Michelle Efferson, Matt “Dude Love” Edwards, David “Double D” Dykes, Len Devall and Nikki Genre.
Coach Sid also shared that the secret ingredient to the team’s success is Little Debbie Cakes.  According to Coach Sid “I’ve never before seen a batter on deck chowing down on a snack cake, but this is certainly a part of our formula for success so we are gonna roll with it.”
