Central Supports LEOs
By Mia Freneaux
Central proved once again it is a city that cares with an outpouring of support for the families of those who lost their lives on July 17. Among the many who reached out were local restaurants who participated in the "25 on the 25th" effort. Participants donated 25% or more of their profits to support the families of our fallen officers. Blackie's Restaurant, MePa's Diner, Our Place Restaurant, American Farmhouse Restaurant, Menchies, Twisted Daquiris and Café Phoenicia all pledged at least 25% of their profits that day.
Local churches held prayer vigils throughout the week. Among these were Grace Church, Magnolia United Methodist Church, and Journey Church. In addition, Journey Church held a day of service on Saturday. Blackwater United Methodist Church held a blood drive to honor the fallen by helping out Our Lady of the Lake's severely depleted blood bank.
In addition, Cross Threads is offering "Back the Blue" t-shirts with 100% of all profits going to support these families. They've sold out of their first run, but are printing more, so order yours now either at Cross Threads or online.
The Hohensee family, who have gained a huge following in our town for their magnificent light display every Christmas and the resultant donations received for various charities, have also created an opportunity. They own Boscoyo Studio, which creates Christmas decorating items for "Extreme Light Fanatics", and are making two versions of Blue LED ribbons with 100% of proceeds going to the EBR First Responders Fund. The smaller one is just under 2 feet tall and selling for $40, and the larger one is just under 4 feet tall and is $80. They can be purchased at Sullivan's Hardware or at Shears Etc. on Millerville Road. You can visit the "Hohensee Family Christmas Lights" Facebook page for more details.
Caliente Mexican Craving is holding a fundraiser this Monday, August 1 at both their Central location and their Lee Drive location. 25% of net sales will be donated to benefit the families of the fallen and injured officers. All proceeds will be forwarded to the BRAF East Baton Rouge First Responders Fund.
Thanks to all of you for showing your compassion, and to all the community who are supporting these efforts.
