The Central Chamber Report

By  |

38.5! That is the percentage of voters that turned out for Saturday’s election.  That is not 38.5% of the state’s population but 38.5% of the registered voters.  To add to the travesty, it was only 38.5% for a state wide election!  I realize the weather was not cooperative, LSU was playing and a variety of other possible distractions were in play.  However, this was about appointing people to an office that they would hold and through which they would direct the state for the next four years!
One of the lessons I have had reinforced over the last six years with the chamber is that you get out of the chamber, the community, civic groups, etc. what you put into those groups.  The importance of being engaged can’t be over emphasized!   Those that find a way to be involved often have the greatest chance of reaping benefits, making a difference and having an influence.  It is always easier to talk about problems, wish you were successful or blame others for difficult issues.  The truly successful don’t just talk but roll up their sleeves and engage.
Back to the election.  We are now headed for a runoff election.  Some voters are energized, some are excited, some are apathetic and yet others are frustrated with the whole process!  Whatever your viewpoint, the next few weeks are extremely important!  Even if you are upset that your original choice didn’t make the runoff, you need to become educated on what the remaining candidates stand for. This is the time to be engaged!  Deciding not to vote is a vote.  You will have one candidate you agree with more than another.  If you decide not to vote you are in essence voting for the other candidate.  Over the next two weeks I will highlight some areas that businesses and citizens should consider when deciding to vote.  Above all, come November 21st, go vote!
