Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week, Central, District Six, and East Side Fire Departments conducted training at the old Greenwell Springs Hospital.  Since the hospital is scheduled to be demolished soon, firefighters were able to obtain realistic training with vertical ventilation, forcible entry, and hose deployment.
Each shift had three scenarios to work through with the last scenario being much more challenging.  During the last scenario, firefighters had to advance a hose line up three flights of stairs, flake the hose out and then charge it with water. With the hose charged, firefighters entered the third floor to find zero visibility from training smoke. Firefighters had to find a room on fire and extinguish the fire.  Once that task was preformed, firefighters searched the floor until they located a victim and successfully removed the victim from the building.
Since all three departments respond together on a regular basis for structure fires and have adopted common standard operating guidelines, this type of training is invaluable said CFD Deputy Chief Charles Mondrick.
Mondrick said all three departments were very appreciative of the Central Community School System for allowing the use of the hospital grounds.
