CFD Responds to Kitchen Fire in Monticello
From Central Fire Department
Early Saturday morning, a Monticello subdivision family was suddenly awakened by a loud popping noise. When the family went to investigate they were met by smoke and heat pouring through the home from a rapidly intensifying kitchen fire. The family was able to escape without injury and contacted the fire department at 1:08 a.m.
Central Fire Department's first engine company was on scene in 3 minutes and discovered the entire kitchen blazing. A quick attack confined the fire to the kitchen and a small area of the den and attic. Unfortunately, heavy smoke and high heat damaged the rest of the home and its contents.
The fire was caused by a resident accidentally leaving a stove burner on after cooking. Central Fire Chief Bill Porche states "Practicing kitchen fire safety, having a home fire extinguisher and an escape plan, along with properly installed and maintained smoke detectors are an occupant’s best defense."
East Side and District Six Fire Departments responded as well and the American Red Cross assisted the displaced occupants.
