Central Thruway Speed Limit Increase

By  |

Press Release

Central, LA –  On Monday, December 15, 2014, the speed limit on the Central Thruway will be increased to 55mph after the necessary studies were conducted by the City-Parish Department of Public Works Traffic Engineering Division.  The Central Thruway is under the jurisdiction of the City-Parish.  The previously posted speed limit was 50mph.

Studies were conducted the week of November 17 – 25, 2014, and after reviewing the studies and making some minor safety improvements, the Traffic Engineering Division made the decision to raise the speed limit to 55mph, which is the maximum speed limit allowed within an incorporated area by state law.

Studies show nearly 16,000 vehicles per day use the Central Thruway between Florida Blvd and Frenchtown Rd, and nearly 14,800 vehicles per day use the Central Thruway between Frenchtown Rd and Greenwell Springs Rd.

The study indicated that nearly two-thirds of the drivers on the roadway drove in the 46-55mph pace speed range.  Only 6% of the drivers exceeded 61 mph.

Thanks also go out to Metro Councilman Scott Wilson for his support of the Traffic Engineering Division conducting the necessary studies.
