1927 Auditorium Update

By  |

CENTRAL FIRST BLUE bBefore I give you the details, keep in mind the image of a 6,000 square foot historic building, restored to its original condition, in the heart of Central, on the very site of the first “Central School,” which could house the area’s History Museum and a performance and exhibition space for the encouragement of the arts in Central.  That building CAN BE Central’s 1927 Auditorium.
When last we spoke about the Auditorium, (The Old Girls’ Gym), $10,000 had been raised by community members as a deposit to the School Board to avoid demolition of the building, and we were awaiting word from the School Board as to what must be done to move the project forward.  The School Board did meet, and here is where we stand:
The Central Cultural Foundation (CCF) was established in 2012 for the purpose of Historic Preservation and Encouragement of the Arts in Central.  I, as the Chairman, and several other CCF Board Members attended the School Board meeting to discuss the project.  The School Board has agreed to work with the CCF in an effort to reach an agreement to allow for the renovation of the Auditorium.
The next step in the process is underway, to craft a “Memorandum of Understanding” setting out the expectations and requirements of both the School Board and the CCF.  Following that, the CCF will have about six months to submit final plans to the School Board for permission to proceed.
