A pot unattended on the stove is believed to be the cause of a late afternoon house fire in the 14000 block of Joor Rd. Sunday according to the Central Fire Department.  Central, District Six and Baker Fire Departments were alerted to the fire at 4:43 pm. Upon arrival, Central firefighters were met with heavy smoke throughout the home and fire venting from the kitchen windows.  As firefighters entered the home they discovered the kitchen totally involved with fire extending into the attic.
An aggressive attack confined the fire to the kitchen and attic, however heat and smoke extensively damaged the rest of the home and its contents.
Both home occupants were sleeping when one of them woke up and discovered the fire.  The occupants and a family pet were able to escape the flames with no injuries.  There were no working smoke detectors in the home and the American Red Cross assisted the displaced occupants.
Central Fire Chief Bill Porche stated the occupants were lucky to awaken in time to escape the flames and deadly smoke.  It is imperative, Porche said, that all homes have working smoke detectors.  National statistics show properly installed and maintained smoke detectors increase the chance of survival in residential fires by 80%.
