Beware of Contractor Scams

    Recently a Jackson Park resident suffered financial loss at the hands of a contractor.  Hired to replace a section of damaged driveway, the contractor broke their sewer line in 4 places and their water line as well, forcing them to pay a plumber $900 to repair both.  They then had to hire another contractor to finish pouring the cement at a cost of $2000, and after cleaning away the mud left by the first contractor, found their sidewalk had been broken up as well.  Researching this contractor online after the fact, they were horrified to find he had been arrested before for scamming someone out of $7000!  These concerned citizens contacted Central Speaks, hoping their costly experience would warn others. 
    Ron Erickson, President of the Central Chamber of Commerce, had this advice to offer: "ALWAYS be sure a contractor is licensed, bonded and insured.  Check with the Baton Rouge Better Business Bureau to see what rating the company has.  Look on Angie's List online for reviews of the business. Ask for references, and call those references.  You can also check to see if they are a member of the Central Chamber of Commerce."  In addition, he urged folks to Shop Central First.  Local business owners know and appreciate the value of a good reputation, and stand by the quality of their work.  Ask to see examples of previous work, if applicable. Always be sure to get the entire job description in writing, and, of course, NEVER pay full price up front.  "Sadder but wiser" is NOT what you want to be when getting work done around your home!
