CFD Responds to Two Fires

    Shortly after midnight, Friday June 13, 2014, Central, District Six, Baker and Chaneyville firefighters responded to a building fire behind a residence in the 11600 block of McCullough Rd.  On arrival Central firefighters found the building totally involved in fire and exposing the main residence, which was approximately 30 feet away, to extreme heat.  Firefighters immediately initiated an aggressive defensive attack on the building fire while protecting the residential structure as well. The fire was controlled in 20 minutes; however firefighters remained on scene until 3:30 am totally extinguishing the fire.  The cause of this fire is undetermined.
     Alert neighbors were credited with observing the fire and notifying the fire department but were unable to awaken the home's occupants. As fire crews arrived and begin to battle the fire, the occupants became aware of the danger and exited the residence.
     The building, which was totally destroyed, contained a motor home, two tractors, one of which was a 1947 John Deere show tractor, 1966 Buick which the owner was about to restore and a large riding lawn mower.  One of the owners two primary vehicle parked outside of the building was destroyed and the second primary vehicle suffered heat damage.  The main residence also suffered minor heat damage. 
     On Saturday June 14, 2014 Central, District Six and St. George firefighters were dispatched to the 3200 block of Quebec St. to assist East Side firefighters on a house fire at 4:50 pm.  Firefighters arrived to find a serious structure fire involving a vacant home which was totally involved with heavy fire blowing through the roof.  The fire was so intense that the home to the right of the vacant structure was starting to burn and the home to the left of the vacant structure had vinyl siding starting to melt. Firefighters were successful in limiting damage to the occupied homes on either side of the vacant structure; however the vacant structure was considered a total loss. The fire was controlled at 5:28 pm and the cause of the fire was considered suspicious and under investigation by East Side investigators.
     There were no civilian or firefighter injuries in these fires.
