Greenwell Springs Hospital Possible High School Site

By  |

At Monday night's Central Community School Board meeting steps were taken to enter into a cooperative agreement with the State of Louisiana over use of the Greenwell Springs Hospital property.  This process should pave the way for legislation to facilitate the transfer of the 150 acre site to BREC and the Central School System.
Under this plan BREC would receive approximately half of the property, including the historic site of the old Greenwell Springs, for use as a park and walking trails.  The Central School System would receive approximately 80 acres that make up the currently abandoned hospital.
The plan under consideration is to eventually build Central's next High School on that site, but that would probably be 10 to 15 years down the road according to School Board officials.  The transfer would be made possible because the value of the property is approximately equal to the costs that would have to be incurred to demolish and do asbestos abatement of the existing buildings.  The site is very close to Hooper Road, which by that time should be a four lane main thoroughfare through Central.
