An Opportunity to Serve

By  |

There are times when everything comes together and life presents you with an opportunity to serve.
It is possibly the worst kept secret in Central that I have been strongly considering running for Mayor in 2014.  It really has not been a secret at all.  I have shared openly with many and sought their advice on whether this is the right thing to do for my family and for our community.  With today’s announcement I have obviously stopped thinking about it and I am running, so I wanted to share a little bit about why.
Five years ago I had no intention of creating the internet community news site CentralSpeaks.com.  Mia and I had spent years involved in our church, Mia’s art studio, running our family business, and coaching softball for my girls.  All of this involvement in the Central community showed me the need for a place where we could all share the celebrations, events, accomplishments and even challenges of our lives.  I saw an opportunity to serve so I created www.CentralSpeaks.com, and the people of Central have been sharing their stories there for five years.  Central Speaks has also grown to become Central’s newspaper and continues to serve the Central community every week.
I did not grow up wanting to be a public servant, but my lifetime involvement in this community led me to an ever greater involvement through Central Speaks, and now an even greater opportunity to serve as Central’s next Mayor if the voters will grant me that privilege.  I can’t begin to share with you in one newspaper column all of the great people I have met in so many amazing organizations, charities, churches and businesses in Central.  I have been privileged not only to have rural Central as a part of my growing up, but to have raised my family here and now to be able to immerse myself in the life of this great community each and every day.
I have watched our young city grow, attended almost every public meeting, and researched and written about every major decision facing Central for the last five years…. and the whole process has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.  Central is truly a great community with a bright future.  Most of all, being so involved in the life of this community has convinced me that this is one of those times when everything has come together and life has presented me with an opportunity to serve.
