School Board Calls Tax Election

By  |
The Central Community School Board has called for a vote of the taxpayers this November to fund capital projects.  The $13.1 million in bonds would allow for (1) Improving facilities at Central High, including the construction of a Ninth Grade Academy Building, parking lot repairs and lighting of ball fields, (2) District-Wide technology improvements and (3) demolition, asbestos abatement and parking upgrade at old Central Middle School.
Dave Freneaux, Finance Committee member Dr. Keith Holmes and Central parent Jon Simmons spoke and asked the School Board to provide an updated Facilities Master Plan before asking the voters to approve this tax.  Mr. Freneaux stated "I want our students to have excellent facilities.  I am supportive of the concept of building a ninth grade academy building, but I can only support this tax if it is a part of a well thought out long term plan that considers facilities, population growth and available capital funding.  I want great schools for our great school system, but I also want to be able to assure the taxpayers that we are spending their tax dollars wisely."
The November 16th election will be for all voters residing in the Central Community School District, which includes virtually all of the City of Central plus an area west of the Comite River to Foster Road.  The resolution to call for the tax election was passed unanimously by the School Board.
