Good News for a Great City

Happy 100th Birthday Earl Turner! – Earl and Daisy Turner are long time members of Blackwater UMC and celebrated her 97th and his 100th birthday last Sunday.  Earl was on active duty in the Army from 1941-45 and is an LSU boxing legend, lettering three years from 1934-36 and leading LSU to its first SEC Championship in 1935.
Flood Study – What a great idea Kathi Cowen brought to the Council, likely saving Central homeowners millions of dollars every year.  And, thank you Council Member Moak for seeing that this project was funded.  Finally, give credit to Mayor Watts and David Barrow for carrying out the nuts and bolts of getting the study done.
CHS Cleanup Day – This is how Central takes care of business!  Come out Saturday at 8 AM and help coaches, parents, teachers, administrators and CHS supporters whip the High School Campus into shape for the start of school.  This is the final workday of a three week Do-It-Yourself facelift.  Schools and communities in most places request funding, have committee meetings and hire contractors.  Central has always taken care of its own and this is a great example.  Come out and pitch in!
Thank you Gordy and Ashley Rush – Former CHS and LSU softball great Ashley (Lewis) Rush gave a great interview last Thursday on the Central Legends radio program (Thursdays 7-8PM on 910 AM following the Sid Edwards Show).  Her passion for the game is as strong as ever, but more importantly she knows that athletics builds character under the right coaching.  And speaking of characters, her husband Gordy Rush became a Centralite when they settled in Central to raise their family.  Now, through the efforts of Gordy and Guaranty Broadcasting, Central High School Football broadcasts will be on FM 104.9 every Friday starting September 6th.
Color In Motion – The 5K run of a few weeks ago at the new school complex raised over $11,000 toward a community bike/jogging path!  Plus, 3,000 people from outside of central came and visited our community.  Thanks to Barbara Guyon and her team for making this happen.
Central Thruway – I tend not to leave Central very often, but when I must I’m thinking I may enjoy this new convenience.  I know this is a great thing for all in Central who work in the southeast BR area.  I drove it after the ribbon cutting and it is certainly a scenic trip as well.  Be careful on the Thruway.  Any new road takes getting used to and this one moves some big vehicles at high speeds.
