Campaigning for Progress

By  |

In a young city where it seems one election campaign after another dominates the news, it is refreshing that our next election is over nine months away.  The signs and mailers will be out soon enough, but thankfully we should be “campaign free” at least long enough to enjoy the summer.  In the meantime fear not; there are plenty of important things happening in Central that deserve our attention.
Beaver Bayou – Work is wrapping up on the Beaver Bayou Watershed study that may save Central Residents in that area big dollars on Flood Insurance.  Thank you Kathi Cowen for the idea and the research, and Council Member Aaron Moak for sponsoring the legislation.
City Center  – Mayor Watts has assembled a task force to evaluate and make recommendations on where to locate our future City Hall, creating a focal point for the city.  Thanks Mayor and committee members.
High School Improvements – Our School Board is considering action to remedy the overcrowding and temporary classrooms at the 40-year-old Central High School.  Thank you School Board for looking out for our children’s present and future needs.
The Color Run – This 5K Race happens this weekend to raise funds to build a walking trail around the new school campus.  Thank you Central School System for putting this on.
Master Plan and new Zoning Classifications – Two years of work by our Master Plan consultants and many meetings with city officials and the public have brought Central to the verge of completion of our Master Plan, a blueprint to ensure well planned and controlled growth for our city.  The final pieces of this project are coming together in the next several months. Thanks to all who have participated in making this happen.
Design Standards – On June 9th the City Council will consider passing an ordinance setting design standards for commercial construction on our main roads.  Thanks City Council for working to enhance the curb appeal of Central.
Campaigning for office is an annoying but necessary part of our governmental process, and “for everything there is a season”, but taking time off to Campaign for Progress…Is Good News for a Great City.
