Girl Scouts from across southeast Louisiana are celebrating the Girl Scout Centennial with an Extravaganza on Saturday, March 17 in Gonzales.  Part of the centennial event includes a historic exhibit showcasing Girl Scouting over its 100 years, and volunteers are seeking memorabilia to include in this display.
“Vintage Girl Scout uniforms, photos, books, newspaper articles, or any other Girl Scout-related items are welcome,” said Kevin Shipp, event coordinator.  “To make special display arrangements and assure materials are returned, people loaning their items should contact the appropriate representatives collecting items for specific time frames.”
According to Shipp, contacts are: 1912  to 1937 – Natalie Miller at 225-953-1239 or [email protected]; 1938 to 1963 – Jan Barbee at 504-289-1291 or [email protected]; 1964 to 1989 – Buddy Anderson at 985-845-4905 or [email protected]; 1990 to 2012 – Mary Prochaska at 225-752-8438 or [email protected]. Items which do not need to be returned can be sent directly to Girl Scouts Louisiana East, c/o Program Dept., 841 S. Clearview Parkway, New Orleans, LA 70121.
The local Girl Scout council is also working with honor students from Loyola University in New Orleans, who as part of their history course “Discovering 1912,” are helping council staff sort through its archives.  Loyola University is celebrating its own 100th anniversary in 1912.
The public is invited to attend the GSLE Centennial Extravaganza on Saturday, March 17, at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center, 9039 St. Landry Rd., Gonzales, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a carnival of rides continuing to 9 p.m.  Cost is $8 per person if purchased by March 2, $10 at the door. Children under 3 and adults, 70 and older, will be admitted free. A $5 carnival riding bracelet is available on site for unlimited riding. Girl and adult volunteers helping with the event will receive discounted event pricing and a free patch.
Hands-on activities, demonstrations, a sing-along, and a Year of the Girl panel with women community leaders discussing female leadership, are just a few of day’s activities.  Designed specifically to appeal to today’s Girl Scouts, activities include science, robotics, the arts, health and fitness, and more.  Extravaganza participants will also hold an item drive to benefit two Children’s Miracle Network beneficiaries, Children’s Hospital in New Orleans and Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge.
Tickets for the Extravaganza are for sale in the Girl Scout council shops at 841 S. Clearview Parkway, Jefferson, and 545 Colonial Drive, Baton Rouge, or online at www.gsle.org.  For additional information, please contact Shipp at 800-644-7571, ext. 2243.
