Sales Taxes & New Home Permits

By  |

Sales tax figures for the month of January 2010 in the city of Central show a 2.6% increase over the same period last year.  Combined general sales and motor vehicle taxes in January 2010 totaled $410,499.05 compared to $400,013.13 in January 2009.

For the first seven months of the city’s current fiscal year which started July 1, 2009, overall sales and motor vehicle taxes are up over 1.5% compared to the same period the year before.  The city had projected sales taxes to grow at a smaller pace than this, which puts the city in good financial condition.  Overall sales tax figures are coming in over 2.5% higher than what the city had budgeted.  City officials contribute part of this increase due to more residents shopping in Central and spending their tax dollars locally.  A City-Parish audit of motor vehicle sales taxes also resulted in an increase in those taxes to Central.

New residential construction is also on the rise.  For the first three months of 2010, a total of 32 new permits were issued for new home constructions.  These permits had a total home valuation of $9,147,348.00.  During the same period last year, only 14 permits were issued for new residential construction.
