CP Football Takes Down Huntington School

By  |

The Central Private Rebels, led by Bobby Muse, who rushed for 334 yards and 3 touchdowns, sprinted past the Huntington School Hounds 53-24 in their MISA  season opener in Ferriday on Friday night.  In the defeat of the Hounds,  the Rebels overcame a 269 yard performance by Eric Bowens of the Hounds who rushed for 194 yards and had 75 receiving yards and scored all four of the HS touchdowns.  Coach Longmire of the Rebels said,”that was the best back I’ve faced in 39 years, but our guy (Muse) is pretty good too.

Huntington scored first with 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter, with Bowens dashing in from 30 yards out.  Central Private answered with a 7-play, 48 yard drive, and Muse covered the last 31 going around the left end for the score.  Brandt Moore added the PAT for a 7-6 Rebel lead.  After forcing the Hounds to turn the ball over on downs,  Muse took the first snap from scrimmage and sprinted 84 yards for his second score of the night. Muse said,”I do not call them big plays, I call them getting the job done.  Before the season, no one was giving us a chance because we had to replace our offensive line, but these guys are doing the job.” The new offensive line is led by the only returning starter Matt Overlease and is solidified by Daniel Holloway, Orrin Byland, Sy Tate, and Brandt Moore.  Overlease said, “We are picking up. Bobby (Muse) had a carreer high rushing tonight.”

Two plays after Muse went 84 yards, Bowens scampered 67 yards for his second touch down.  Another missed PAT made the score CP 13 HS 12 at the half. The third quarter turned into a track meet.  The running began on the third play of the half when Jason Young hit 8th grader Ryan Bowman with a 90 yard strike for six.  Bowman was able to take the ball away from the Hound defender and race untouched into the endzone.  They then nailed the 2-pt conversion as Young hit Lance Wicker for the score and a 21-12 Rebel lead. Four plays later, Bowens dashed 59 yard to pay dirt.  A missed PAT left the score 21-18. Muse then galloped 59 yards in two plays to move the score to 27-12 with the missed PAT.  A 42 yard Jess Dossett toss to Bowens ended a 3 play 60 yard Hound drive.  Holloway mad a huge hit on Dossett to deny HS the 2-pt conversion.  Three plays later, Young again found Bowman, this time for 61 yards, on a perfect pass that Bowman was able to catch in stride and take into the end zone untouched. The Rebel defense was able to take over from this point.  Steven O’Bryant plucked a fumble out of mid air and rambled 42 yards for the score.  The Moore PAT put CP up 47-24.  A fumble on the ensuing kickoff was recovered by Bowman.  Four plays later, Bowman scored on a 16-yard run to close out the game in a 53-24 Rebel victory.
