The Central Private Rebels ran into a buzz saw by the name of Tipp McKenzie on Friday night in Baker and although they brought the oak trees they could not slow down the running back from Trinity Episcopal High School. McKenzie touched the football 5 times on Friday night and scored 4 touchdowns as he led the Saints to a 42-14 victory over the Rebels.
On McKenzie's first carry of the night he toted the football 58 yards before being chased down by Zack LeBlanc on the Rebel 5-yard line. One play later Trevor Shepherd was able to recover a fumble to halt the Saint drive. The CP offense which was able to ground out 256 yards rushing was able to follow the blocking of Rhett Seguin, Orin Byland, Daniel Holloway, Brennan West, Brandon Sullivan and Sy Tate to move the ball out of the shadows of its own end zone before being forced to punt. After forcing the Saints to punt, the Rebels took to the air where McKenzie demonstrated supreme leaping ability as he went high into the air to spear a pass that he took 54 yards in the opposite direction to open the scoring. Zach Marshall added his first of six PATs to make the score 7-0.
The Rebels were able to take the kick off and with Dustin Johnson and Troy Lowe pounding the inside of the Saint defense, advance to the Saint 9 yard line. Two successive fumbles ended the drive for the Rebels. After a short run by the Saints, McKenzie was off again, this time for 79 yards and a touchdown.
The Rebel offense was again to move the ball on the ground but an errant pass was picked off by Givonni Dent and 47 yards later the Saints were up 21-0.
The story continued as the Rebels again drove down the field to the Saint 20-yard line but were forced to turn the ball over on downs. Faced with a fourth down decision the Saints again turned to McKenzie and this time he took a swing pass from Dent and took a 50 yard touchdown and a 28-0 halftime lead.
A 3 yard rush by Dent following a fumble on the second half kickoff made the score 35-0. The Rebels were then able to turn a long drive into 8 points on their next possession. A mixture of Johnson’s rushing, passing from Ryan Bowman, and a few penalties on the Saints led to a 2 yard blast into the end zone from Johnson and a 2pt conversion pass from Seth Stevens to Bowman.
McKenzie turned a 4th and six play into a 49 yard touchdown before Bowman hit Lance Wicker for a 43 yard touchdown pass for the final points on the evening. Johnson led the Rebels carrying the ball 27 times for 150 yards behind an offensive line that Coach Mike Longmire played its best game of the year. The Rebels return to action in Franklinton on Friday night.
