Business Spotlight: Side of the Road Seafood
By Beth Fussell
Side of the Road Seafood is under new management. It is now a family business owned and operated by the Wickwire family, who took over this past April. This seafood market and restaurant is located on Greenwell Springs Road just past Flannery (in the same parking lot as Jerry Lee’s). The doors open at 10 a.m. 7 days a week, and close at 7:30 Monday through Thursday, at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 6 p.m. on Sundays. Lunch and dinner are now served daily, and breakfast is in the works for the near future.
The menu at Side of the Road has everything from chicken wings and burgers to salads and, of course, seafood plates. They even have a $2.99 lunch special every day that includes either a catfish sandwich or a cheeseburger, along with fries and a drink. If you are looking for something unusual (and delicious), try the Horseshoe Sandwich, a Side of the Road special that features hamburger patties on Texas toast topped with French fries and cheese sauce.
Side of the Road also has a good selection of fresh seasonal seafood to take home. Options include crab, shrimp, and fish, as well as more unusual items like frog legs and gator sausage. Crawfish is available seasonally, when you can get it either live or boiled. Side of the Road is also the only place around where you can find New England-style steamed seafood. Some special items are in stock as well, such as crab boil and many different seasoning mixes. The next time you are looking for some fresh seafood or a quick, reasonably-priced meal, pay a visit to the friendly staff at Side of the Road Seafood.
