CHS Volleyball Team Ready for District Play

By  |

As the Lady Wildcats open district play next week, this year’s team will continue to fight as they have in each preseason game. The Wildcats opened the season falling to traditional Baton Rouge powers Redemptorist (0-3) and St. Michael (1-3), before bouncing back and taking fourth place in the Denham Springs Invitational, where senior setter Casey Brown was named to the all-tournament team. The Wildcats then beat Zachary in straight sets and took second place in the Dutchtown Invitational, losing only to champion Lutcher. With consecutive home games, the Lady Wildcats beat Division IV power Episcopal (3-1) and former district rival Denham Springs (3-1). With a victory at Broadmoor (3-0), the team was on a roll and looked to defend its title in the Istrouma Slammin Classic this past weekend. After placing second in their pool, the Lady Wildcats beat Istrouma and Broadmoor before knocking out Live Oak in a comeback win to defend its championship from 2008. With the win the Wildcats repeated as tournament champions for the second straight year. Juniors Taylor Padgett and Tremelia Kelly (MVP) were named to the all tournament team which was selected by opposing coaches. This week the Lady Wildcats travel to St. Amant and University High before starting district play next week against Glen Oaks.

(The volleyball districts are different due to the lack of schools in Louisiana participating in Volleyball. The LHSAA wanted 5 equal classifications for even playoff brackets. All volleyball playing schools were placed in order by attendance and divided by 5. Central found itself in the newly formed Division II (4A) and in a district composed of Live Oak, Glen Oaks, Istrouma, Scotlandville and Hammond.)
