CP Advances To Final Game In Playoffs

The Simpson Academy Cougars could not have written a better start to game one of the second round of the MPSA than actually occurred in the first inning.  The only problem for them was that the game was seven innings long.  Before recording the second out of the ballgame, the Cougars had a four run lead on the strength of back to back dingers by Lee Mashburn and Derek Sanders.  A base hit by Mikey Andrews later in the inning would be their last until the seventh inning.  Central Private starter Gage Wilkinson was able to find his rhythm and remain perfect on the season with a record of 8-0.  Wilkinson struck out 16 Cougars during the game and struck out at least two in every inning.  At one point in the game he struck out 5 consecutive Cougars.  The Rebels were able to climb back into the ball game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and four more in the second.  A double to the left field wall by Brennan Courville in the first scored Wilkinson and Jacob Fryoux.  Fryoux was perfect on the night with three hits and two runs scored.  Thomas Bourgeois provded the ammunition in the second with a two bagger to the right field wall.  The blast scored Fryoux and Chase Metz.  Travis Rose and Logan Lewis also crossed the plate for the Rebels in the inning.  After 4 scoreless innings the Cougars closed the final gap to one with a run in the seventh.  After a walk and a base hit left runners on the corners with no outs, Wilkinson fanned the next two hitters.  A wild pitch allowed a run to score but third baseman Lewis was able to retrieve the carom and apply the tag to Sanders who was trying to advance from first to third on the throw.
The victory has the Rebels one game away from clinching the series which resumes in McGee, Mississippi on Thursday.
