RACE DAY
Check-in: 9:30 a.m. Arrival of beds, safety inspections, collection of signed waivers
and review rules of race.
Race Start: 10:00 a.m.
Awards: “Fastest Team,” “Best Decorated Bed” and “Favorite Sleepwear.”
RULES OF THE RACE
Participants in the race must be 14 years of age or older.
It is required each team have at least 5 people (4 runners and 1 rider). The riders need to
be dressed in sleepwear and will automatically be entered in the competition award for
“Favorite Sleepwear.” The beds will also be in competition for the “Best Decorated Bed” and
the trophy will go to the “Fastest Team.” Participants are encouraged to decorate themselves
and/or the beds in a fun manner.
Check-in/orientation begins at 9:30 am at the Central Square. At this time, the beds will arrive and line up for safety inspections. All signed waivers must be turned in at this time (if not already done so). Race Officials to review rules and race course with the teams. All participants must follow instructions of the Race Officials.
Beds will leave the starting line with their team pushers, who are allowed to wear sleepwear
provided by the sponsor. The rider must have sleepwear on. Each heat will consist of one length
down and one length back(approx 600FT). Once over the halfway mark, pushers will need to successfully
complete a “change in position drill” (excluding the rider in the bed). The team may turn the
bed 180° or just “about face,” and push the bed back towards the finishing line.
This will be a “Fastest timed Race.” Beds will race one at a time. The top three teams with the fastest time will advance to the second round. The beds will race again and the team with the fastest time will win the “Fastest Bed”. Awards will be given for “Favorite Sleepwear” and “Best Decorated Bed.” The awards ceremony will take place immediately after the race. A representative of your team must be present to win.
All Sponsors are allowed to display their name on the bed so that it may be visible to the
audience.
The use of distraction devices, such as silly strings, horns, megaphones, whistles, etc, are
approved and recommended. All such devices must be used in a respectful manner and not to
harm or degrade contestants and/or the audience.
Decisions made by Race Officials are final.
NOTE: Your safety is very important to us. Participants must wear good running shoes. Please no
flip-flops, sandals or bare feet. Accidents may occur such as falling down on pavement,
scrapes, bruises, tripping, collisions, etc. Safety gear to avoid such hazards is recommended.
BED CONSTRUCTION
The frame of the bed racer does not need be of an original bed, but it must mimic a real bed in
appearance by having a headboard and footboard.
Beds are to have a minimum of four wheels, so situated to make the bed stable and safe.
Wheels of any size may be used. You may have swivels, steering, or permanently fixed wheels.
Hint: Fixed wheels are more than adequate.
The bed cannot have any means of propulsion or brakes other than provided by the runners:
human power only, no motors.
The beds may have push bars, though may not exceed the overall width of the bed.
The mattress and/or box spring must be a manufactured twin size bed. The minimum
mattress/box spring dimensions must be approximately 39” x 72”.
Mattress must be outfitted with at least one blanket and one pillow. Keep in mind there is an
award for the “Best Decorated Bed.”
NOTE: A 2-second penalty will be assessed for every bed manufacturing regulation broken.
We reserve the right to disqualify any bed built not within the guidelines and/or inappropriate attire.
