President’s Award of Excellence for Outstanding Law-Related Education Presented to CPS Teacher

    New Orleans, Louisiana, January 16, 2015 – In recognition of her commitment to law and civic education, Louisiana Center for Law and Civic Education President Barbara Turner Windhorst presented Alicia Fergerson with a plaque and funds to purchase law-related education materials for her classroom at a reception held during the Louisiana State Bar Association’s MidYear Meeting in New Orleans. The President’s Award is given to an outstanding Louisiana elementary, middle or high school teacher who imparts knowledge and understanding of Law and Civic Education and demonstrates the use of interactive learning techniques that make a difference in student learning. Award presentation is a joint partnership of the Louisiana Center for Law and Civic Education and the Louisiana State Bar Association.
    Fergerson has taught school for 17 years and is the Social Studies Department Head at Central Private School in Central, LA. She teaches American history, civics, world geography and yearbook publishing. She is co-sponsor of the junior class, co-sponsor of the prom committee, sponsor of the school yearbook, and responsible for the production of the school newspaper. Fergerson is also an officer of the Louisiana Council for the Social Studies.
    Past honors include: James Madison Memorial Foundation Fellow for the State of Louisiana; one of 25 nationally chosen participants for the 2014 “Liberty, Responsibility, and the New Deal”, a co-sponsored colloquium of the Bill of Rights Institute and Liberty Fund; and is one of 25 nationally chosen participants for “Slavery and the Constitutional Republic”, a 2015 colloquium of Ashbrook Center and Liberty Fund.

    The LCLCE, the public education partner of the Louisiana State Bar Association, promotes the practical understanding of and respect for the law. The Center is a nonprofit organization that coordinates, implements and develops civics and law-related education programs for use throughout the state’s schools. The Center also trains teachers to assist in the delivery of these programs. The LCLCE is financially assisted, in part, by the Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts Program through the Louisiana Bar Foundation.
