CHS Girl’s Bowling Steamrolls Defending State Champs

By  |

Almost one year ago, Central Girls Bowling had won their biggest match (arguably in school history) of the year against Albany, 14-13.  A month later in the State Playoffs, Central was upset by lower seed St Scholastica and watched Albany claim the State Championship.  With five of the starting six from last year’s team back and remembering how close they came to bowling Albany in the state finals, Central wanted to make a statement against the defending state champions.  On Wednesday (2-3-15), that statement was made loud and clear.
This year’s non-district matchup was at the Hornets’ (3-1) house in Hammond, Tangi Lanes, Tuesday February 3rd.  The Wildcats started off the match by rolling a solid 951 to the Hornets’ 882 and took a slim 5-3 lead in Game 1.  Leadoff bowler Sam Soule (Sophomore) had the high game of a 176 and Kaylee Robinson (Junior) chipped in with a 169.  That would be as close as the match would get as Central really showed what this team could be capable of throughout this season and into the state playoffs.  Up until two weeks ago, a Central Girls team had never cracked a 1000 game let alone an 1100 game.  But that all changed in Game 2 when the Wildcats cranked out an astonishing 1136 game!  The Wildcats would easily win Game 2 8-0 and by almost 300 pins.  So how good is an 1136?  Well, so far this season that 1136 would be the 2nd highest game rolled by any team in the Baton Rouge area, boys or girls!  The only team that has shot a higher game is the Central Boys’ 1180.  Brianna McCurley (Sophomore) led the record setting game with an excellent 224, followed by Haley Young’s (Senior/Captain) 213, Sarah LeDuff’s (Junior) 197, Brittnee Robinson’s (Sophomore) 187, K Robinson’s 158 and Soule’s 157.
Up 13-3 going into Game 3, the Wildcats put the finishing touches on the match with another monster game of 1038 to Albany’s 905.  Central cruised to a 6-2 win in Game 3.  LeDuff led the charge this time with a great 227, followed closely behind by Young’s 213, B Robinson’s 185 and McCurley’s 173.  In the end, the Wildcats would win the match by the final score of 22-5 and 3125 to 2645 in Total Pins.  Central’s 3125 was another school record for highest series and smashed the previous record (2842) by almost 300 pins.  Again, how good is a 3125 series?  It would be the 3rd highest series rolled by any team in the Baton Rouge area this season, once again BOYS OR GIRLS!   Only Central Boys’ 3252 and Dutchtown’s (Co-ed) 3158 is higher!  Overall, Central was led by everyone.  LeDuff was high with a 588 series, followed by Young’s 580, McCurley’s 553, B Robinson’s 504, K Robinson’s 451 and Soule’s 449.  This is also the first time in school history four girls shot over 500 in the same match.  Albany was led by Banner Hammons’ 548 series (174, 185, 189).
On Monday February 2nd the Wildcats won their fourth match of the season with an easy win over first year team East Ascension (2-2).  The Spartans are anchored by a solid 1-2 punch in Emily Maness and Bailee Chapman, but Central’s depth proved to be too much to overcome.
The Wildcats won all three games, winning Game 1 6-2 (853-617), Game 2 8-0 (932-725) and Game 3 6-2 (841-820). With the 3 bonus points for Total Pins, the Wildcats cruised to a 23-4 (2626-2162 Total Pins) victory.  Sarah LeDuff led the way with a 550 (212).  Haley Young had a nice 187 and Brittnee Robinson was right behind with a 176.  The Spartans were led by Chapman’s 534 (188) and Maness’s 521 (198).
