Mike Faulk is on a mission to help each of the 4,400+ students in the Central Community School System excel beyond others in the state, and so far he has witnessed the community support that has made state's newest school district one to imitate. He shared many successes, one of which is Central's third graders are on target to rank in first place for the 5th consecutive year.
Faulk spoke during RWC's October Membership Meeting, sharing specifics for the $13.1 million bond issue election being held November 16 to extend current construction bonds approved by voters in 2009. The bond extension would not increase taxes, just the length of term of the loan.
A new 9th grade academy, system-wide technology expansions, parking lot repairs and lighting for ball fields at Central High School, and demolition of parts of the Central Middle School are among changes Faulk believes will continue the improvements that have made Central school top school ratings possible.
Ashton Kennedy, President of the Central High School Student Council and Ashton Denham came to thank RWC members and Central for generously supporting "Trevor's Wish" for Trevor Sims, an 11 year old Central student who died last Wednesday of cancer. Central's Student Council raised over $16,000 and food donations.
Trevor and his family experienced hunger and poverty since Trevor's diagnosis when he was undergoing treatment. Trevor decided his dying wish was to make sure no one was hungry in Baton Rouge again. The outpouring of support was tremendous, and has revitalized food donations for the Baton Rouge Food Bank. RWC was among donors to the Trevor's Wish T-Shirt sales, yielding another $1,000.
