When Michelle Lewis was thinking about a fitting tribute for her father, Dennis Lewis, she immediately thought of how much he loved his city. Mr. Lewis, who passed away in January of this year, was a life long resident of Central and the head of Lewis Wrecker Service, Inc., the business his parents began in 1956. When he took over the reins in 1980, he continued the family tradition of personal service and care for customers that has given Lewis Wrecker the reputation it has to this day. Mr. Lewis was one of the earliest members of the Central Area Business Association (now the Chamber of Commerce) and helped put together the annual Christmas Parade. To this day, Lewis Wrecker provides Santa’s sleigh, along with its transportation and throws, for what has become a Central tradition. In addition, Mr. Lewis was a long time member of the Board of Directors for the Central Fire Department. “He really was a good guy,” shared Police Chief Doug Browning, a friend of many years, “his compassion toward the public always stood out. He would go out of his way to help others. He was public oriented in all he did, both in business and his private life. He was the kind of person you’d want both your public and private figures to be.”
Michelle, knowing how much her father cared for so many, decided that a drive for the Central Food Bank would really epitomize all the things her father stood for. Holidays traditionally drain food banks, and Pete and Anna Marie Grissom acknowledge that there is more demand than ever on ours. Michelle knew an extra effort at this time of year would help many of our neighbors. (quote from Michelle).
The food drive will begin on November 29 and run through December 9. Collection containers will be located at several local businesses. In addition, a barrel will be placed in front of Zoar Baptist Church on the day of the Christmas Parade. Help Michelle realize her dream of memorializing her dad by helping the neighbors he cared so much about.
