Fire Department Emphasizing Kitchen Fire Prevention

By  |

From the Central Fire Department
From October 6-12, we will be spreading the word that more fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home—and we will help teach people how to keep cooking fires from starting in the first place.
Our fire prevention office reaches over 4000 people a year with public education fire safety programs. We go to all the elementary schools and day cares in our district and teach k4 –2nd grade how to escape their home if it was on fire. Children are taught the use of 911 and how to stop drop and roll.  A smoke house  is used to show the kids that you have to feel your way around because you can’t see in the smoky conditions. Kitchen fire safety is presented to  middle school students. A fire extinguisher training system  allows students to use an extinguisher to put out a fire. After this class they will know the different classes of fire and what extinguisher to use.
Replacing smoke alarm batteries and smoke alarms when needed is a huge part of prevention. To help promote this we can provide these services for our elderly community and others who cannot provide these items for themselves. We also have 4 child car seat technicians that will educate caregivers on proper installation of child safety seats with an appointment.
These are a few of the things that Your Central Fire Department Fire Prevention office does on a daily basis. In order for us to continue these services we ask for your support on our Renewal on October 19th. Absentee voting has already started.
