Central needed only the first quarter to build a 36-0 lead over Istrouma Friday night on the way to a 55-12 season-opening victory. Central, a Division 5A school and a much larger football program than Istrouma, quickly wore down the Division 2A Indians. Speedster Gary Triplett scored on three first quarter drives and Shane Smith and Kevin Henry each returned interceptions for touchdowns.
Central showed a strong passing game and good timing offensively. The stingy Wildcat run defense shut down the Indians and yielded a net negative 34 yards. Coach Sid Edwards of Central commented: “I was pleased with our intensity and efficiency against Istrouma.”
Senior QB Jarrad Hayes, declared eligible for competition only two days earlier, was 13 for 16 passing for 171 yards and four TD’s. Using a “Rushing by Committee” approach, ten Wildcat runners combined for 185 yards and touchdowns by Leo Brownfield and Gary Triplett. Central’s receiving corps added 4 scores, one each by James Schopp and Terrell Chatman and two by Triplett.
The Wildcat Defense held Istrouma to 106 total yards and logged 5 sacks and three interceptions. Kicker Greg Noel was 4 for 4 on extra points with John Thibodeaux adding one PAT and Elizabeth Wicker seeing her first two kicking attempts as a CHS varsity player.
