On the afternoon of June 12th, nearly 50 children participated in a football camp in the City of Central that featured former Southern University great, Donnell Baker. Baker shared with the children life lessons in perseverance and dedication. Not only did Baker serve as the first of several motivational speakers for the 3-day camp, he is also one of the volunteer coaches for the recently formed Central Youth Football Organization, sponsors of the Central Bobcats.
The Central Bobcats are hosting a 3-day youth football camp from 6pm to 8pm each night at Jackson Park on Sullivan Road in Central. The park will also serve as the home base for the youth football team for kids between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. The Bobcats have actually returned to life after a nearly 20 year hiatus. With a constantly increasing population as a results of the highly regarded school district in Central, more parents are looking for activities for their children to participate in.
"What better way to channel the growth of youth football in the Central Community, than to bring back the old Central Bobcats organization? It's hard to find someone in Central between the ages of 35-45 that doesn't remember the original Central Bobcats founded by Coach Gene Robillard. I can still see in my mind, him driving through Central with his black and orange truck picking up kids before practice and dropping them off after practice," said Donald Mayeaux a longtime Central resident and founder of the new Central Bobcats organization.
Additional speakers for the camp which runs through this Friday include LSU's former All-SEC Academic Defensive End Charles Thomas, III and Central High Assistant Football Coach Ken Hilton.
