The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Information Center of LA and Other Relatives as Parents will hold its 15th annual conference next Friday, May 3 at the Holiday Inn South, 9940 Airline Hwy in Baton Rouge. To register for the conference by phone, please call 336-8700. The theme for this year’s conference is Education: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren – Where the Learning Begins. Workshop topics include Internet Safety, Career Choices for Students, Parent Access, and Counseling for Adolescents. Conference sponsors include the Louisiana Children’s Trust Fund, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, and Entergy. The conference receives support from elected officials which include Senator Sharon Broome, Representative Regina Barrow, and Councilwoman Ronnie Edwards.
The guest speaker for the conference is Mr. Marlon Cousin, who earned both a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications and a Master’s Degree in Education Administration and Supervision from Southern University. He is currently the Coordinator of Title 1 for East Baton Rouge Parish Schools.
According to Generations United, there were 7.8 million children in the United States living in grandfamilies, where grandparents or other relativess are the householders. There are 2.7 million grandparents who are responsible for most of the basic needs of children living with them. Louisiana rates third in the nation in grandparent headed households.
The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Information Central of LA, Inc. (GRGICL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to offering both information and support to grandpaqrents raising grandchildren and other relatives serving as parents to children who are not their own. GRGICL partners with other agencies and organizations to help empower grandparents and kinship caregivers.
