Triumph and Tragedy

The 117th run of the Boston Marathon will sadly be forever marred by the tragedy caused by the horrific actions of a crazed individual.  However, the triumph of the human spirit will also mark April 15th, shining through the darkness in the form of courage and care.
As flags from many countries waved in the breeze, symbolizing the unity felt among all participants, Central High School teacher and track coach Adam MacDowell crossed the finish line in 22nd place.  Keeping a pace faster than his goal of 5:15 throughout much of the race, Coach MacDowell came very close to meeting his personal best time of 2:17:27, which he achieved in the Olympic Trials.  Ranked at 27, Coach moved up 5 places in the race, quite an achievement among a group of international long distance stars.  Central is blessed to have such a high caliber athlete involved with our students.  Thanks Coach for your dedication and example.  We are proud of you.
Please join all of us in praying for those suffering in the aftermath of what should have been a joyous occasion.  The words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ring so true: "When evil men plot, good men must plan.  When evil men burn and bomb, good men must build and bind.  When evil men shout ugly words of hatred, good men must commit themselves to the glories of love."
