Winding down the area's winter hummingbird count, Nancy Lang Newfield, Kevin Morgan, and Steve Locke recently spent a day in Central at the home of Allen & Janie Hill. The Hills keep their feeders out as an available source of nectar year round to accomodate the little visitors who choose to winter here when flowers are not abundant.   One black chinned hummer and two rufous hummers were weighed, measured, observed, banded, and then released.  As the season changes, these birds will soon migrate back to their homes on the West Coast, and the familiar Ruby throated hummingbirds who spend their summers in our area will be arriving shortly.
Ms. Newfield a 1963 graduate of Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge is a resident of Metairie who has been studying hummingbirds and gardening for them for over 30 years.  She conducts seminars and banding events to increase the knowledge and awareness of the variety and uniqueness of the hummingbird, as well as the flowers and plants that attract them to a site.   She has authored numerous articles and books, the latest produced by The Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program housed at NSU in Thibodaux, LA.  titled LOUSIANA HUMMINGBIRDS which is filled with lovely photographs and useful information.  Newfield's contact info is [email protected].
