Beginning in 2014, Central’s Council Members, Police Chief and Mayor will be limited to three consecutive terms in office.  Most people asked expected the ordinance to pass, especially in light of the recent very strong vote to implement term limits for the School Board.  The surprise came Tuesday night when Council Members Messina, Washington and LoBue voted 3-2 and defeated an amendment which would apply that same three consecutive term limit to themselves.
Beginning in 2014, all Central elected officials will be limited to 12 years in office.  However, the three Council Members voting against making term limits retroactive will be able to serve longer.  Council Member Washington will be able to serve 21 years and Council Members Messina and LoBue 16 years each.
Council Members DeJohn and Moak stated that they would vote in favor of term limits but could not vote for an ordinance that applied three term limits to everyone else but did not to the current Council.  For that reason the two of them voted against the ordinance, which passed 3-2.  An additional amendment to change the three term limit to two terms was also defeated by a 4-1 vote with Moak the lone vote in favor.
