The Central Wildcats represented our city well Thursday night in their win over Denham Springs.  The game was regionally televised by Cox and could be seen in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and statewide in Louisiana.
“A very big win.  We played a very good football team, and other than the first seven seconds of the game I thought we were just outstanding.” Those were Coach Sid Edwards’ thoughts immediately after the game last Thursday night.
Coach Edwards was referring to the opening kickoff in which Denham’s Andrew Ayres ran for 60 yards to score the first touchdown of the game.  Central answered with a 10 play, 73 yard drive culminating in a 12 yard scoring run by senior Lamonte Juneau.  Juneau finished the game with 63 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown.  Quarterback Brett Courville was rock steady again going 11-23 for 177 yards with one interception.  Coach Sid in a post game televised interview said of Courville, “He’s the best quarterback in the State and college coaches’ better wake up.”  Brett had what was probably his best rushing performance of the year with touchdown runs of 55 and 29 yards.  Senior wide-out Devon Gales had a good night, including a “Sports Center Top 10” type catch for a touchdown.  Gales had 67 yards receiving and 26 yards rushing for the game.  Central had their own kick return for a touchdown when sophomore Terrell Chatman took the 3rd quarter kickoff up the far sideline for a 67 yard score.
Central’s defense was outstanding on the night limiting Denham to 200 yards of total offense, forcing two fumbles and two interceptions.  They also held Senior Arkansas commit Kaleb Blanchard to 68 yards on 15 attempts.  Central’s senior linebacker duo Thomas Eddlemon and Antonio Ragusa each recovered fumbles and senior defensive backs Paul Broussard and Sean Parker continued to show great hands with interceptions.
The Wildcats had a facet of the game in which they needed to improve…penalties.  Coach J.R. Owens challenged the team last week to cut down on penalties, promising that if they did there would be no running at Monday’s practice.  The young men accepted Coach Owens’ challenge.  For the previous week’s game against Walker, Central had 6 penalties for 38 yards.  This week they only had 3 penalties for 10 yards (I know, 3 for 10 yards, how does that happen? One penalty had no yards associated).  No running for Central on Monday!
