The Value of a Glass of Lemonade

By  |

How do we react in the face of another's troubles?  Some Central residents have one answer.  Two weeks ago, a Central resident was told by his doctor that he had cancer, and had between one and two years to live.  This resident has seen his health deteriorate in just this short amount of time.  Last Saturday, four little girls between 5 and 6 years old who live at the end of this gentleman's block on Shetland Drive, came to his door and asked permission to set up a lemonade stand in front of his house.  After spending the whole day selling lemonade, they took down their stand, put the money they'd made in an envelope, placed it by his door, rang the bell, and ran away.  The gentleman was very touched, but felt he couldn't accept the  money and returned it with thanks to the little girls.  "I am a Marine Corps Vietnam vet," he shared, "All any of us want is thanks for our service.  I kept the posters, though."   This reminds us all of the great service our veterans have given without any desire for recognition, but how meaningful it is when we get a chance to say thanks.  And, how touching and reassuring it is that these young children undertook such a selfless act in kindness and support of their neighbor.  Central has a bright future as a community if these are representative of the generations to come.
