BATON  ROUGE (August 15, 2012)—Girls, ages 9-14,  interested in designing, building, and programming a robot are invited to the Girl Scouts First LEGO League kick-off and informational meeting on Tuesday, August 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Girl Scouts Regional Service Center, 545 Colonial Drive in Baton Rouge
Participation in the First Lego League introduces girls to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. The team of about 10 girls is coached and mentored by members of the Society of Women Engineers.
“We meet weekly at the Girl Scout regional office during tournament season which runs from late August to early December to prepare for the regional qualification in November,” said   Diane Doise, with the Society of Women Engineers. “This year’s tournament is December 8 in New Orleans.”
Any interested girl (non-Girl Scouts welcome) and her guardian are encouraged to attend the August 21st kick off, or to email Doise at [email protected].  Once a girl has determined she wants to participate, an application and $25 per participant will need to be submitted to the Girl Scouts Louisiana East council, attention Kevin Shipp.  Applications can be downloaded atwww.gsle.org/events/documents/2012FirstLEGOLeagueApplicationForm.pdf
