Contractor Law Change Affects Roofers
Effective August 1, home improvement contractors who are performing residential work in excess of $1,500 and not over $75,000 must be registered with the State Licensing Board for Contractors and must provide proof of general liability insurance and carry worker’s comp. insurance. The old law was $7,500 to $75,000. This new law will affect small maintenance jobs around people's homes. For example, many roofing contractors will now be subject to this new law. Many of their jobs are less than $7,500 and exempt under the old law, but will now require a license. The new law also includes specific requirements for contracts, deposits and the right to cancel contracts for roofing jobs paid for with insurance proceeds.
