Under Louisiana law, each four years the revenue generated by property taxes are recalculated when property values are reassessed. Next Monday the Central Community School Board will meet to consider whether to allow property tax rates in Central to reduce due to increasing property values. If no action is taken, each property owner will see a reduction in their property tax rates. If, by a two-thirds vote of the School Board, the decision is made to keep property taxes at their current levels, an estimated additional $361,545 would be generated to support the operation of Central's Community Schools.
Those in favor of leaving property taxes at the current rates argue that the increased revenue to the school system amounts to a "cost of living" increase because the cost of running a school system has also risen over the last four years. Those opposed to rolling forward the existing tax rates argue that a failure to reduce the property tax rates amounts to a tax increase. Whether you favor or oppose the rolling forward of taxes, your opportunity to be heard on the matter comes this Monday. The floor will be opened for public comment prior to the Board taking any action on the matter. The public notice for the meeting reads as follows:
Notice is hereby given pursuant to Article 7, Section 23(C) of the Constitution and R.S. 47:1705(B) that a public hearing of Central Community School System will be held at Central High School Theater, 10200 East Brookside Drive, Central, LA 70818 on Monday July 23, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. to consider levying additional or increased millage rates without further voter approval or adopting the adjusted millage rates after reassessment and rolling forward to rates not to exceed the prior year’s maximum. The estimated amount of tax revenues to be collected in the next tax year from the increased millage is $ 4,732,196, and the amount of increase in taxes attributable to the millage increase is $ 361,545.
