Business Spotlight: Central City Antiques
By Marissa Rasch
If you’ve ever admired your grandmothers tea set or that lovely, refinished table on “Fixer Upper”, but you don’t want to do the work, and your grandmother wants to keep her tea set, I have a place for you!
Central City Antiques sells amazing merchandise. Everything in this shop is so unique. Paula and Leroy Hooper have been in the business of buying, selling, and trading antiques off and on for 20 years. Paula says, “I just like taking something old and making it pretty. I love dealing with the public. I listen to what people are looking for and I try to find it for them.” She wants everyone to be able to come in and find something and not break the bank.
Paula and Leroy Hooper have been at Central City Antiques since October. Central City Antiques has 20 dealers in their shop. Included in those dealers are Staci Dial and Blayr Drumm, who do most of the beautiful chalk painting on these classic pieces of furniture. “I have some awesome dealers!” Paula says. She carries a large selection of chalk paint and Orleans candles. She also has a cottage in the back that is packed with more antiques, furniture and unique items.
Paula says she hopes to be in business for a long time because people always need something. “You look at some of the newer things and they don’t last long. You stop and look at antique furniture and it’s still here 100 years later.” She has many pieces in her home that are from the 1800’s. She loves the thrill of finding that special antique and finding out the history behind it because, as she says, you have to know where it came from. Other items you’ll find here are great smelling bath bombs, beautiful frames, mirrors, lots of jewelry, many vintage paintings and canvases.
Central City Antiques will be holding a special Valentine’s Day Sale on Sunday, February 12 from 1 to 5. Drawings will be held for a vintage print of the 1924 LSU vs. Tulane football game mounted on canvas and a silver slide bracelet studded with genuine topaz, peridot, garnet, ruby and amethyst. Come in and find a special treasure for your special someone, or take one home for yourself!
Central City Antiques is open 10-5pm Tuesday-Saturday and 1-5pm on Sunday every week. They are closed on Mondays. They are located at 10443 Joor Road across from the Lil’ Wildcats Daycare. Make sure and stop there soon! You never know what you’ll find and I’m sure you won’t regret the trip!
