Early Voting for CCSS Tax Renewal Begins Saturday: School Funding Has Been In Place Since 2007
Press Release
CENTRAL, La. – Voters in the Central Community School District will be able to vote early, beginning this Saturday (Feb. 20), on the renewal of a 10-year, 32.50-mill property tax that is on the March 5 election ballot.
The week-long early voting period for the March 5 election extends from Saturday, Feb. 20, to Saturday, Feb. 27.
The school funding proposition on the ballot is not a new tax, and it will not increase what taxpayers in the Central Community School District are currently paying each year. The dedicated 32.50 mills fund the general operations of the school system and maintenance of the school district’s facilities. The millage currently generates $4.37 million each year, according to Superintendent Michael Faulk.
“The revenue from this dedicated ad valorem tax lays the foundation for learning in the Central Community. It accounts for a large percentage of our school system’s general budget, and nearly half of all local revenues brought in for our schools,” Faulk said.
Voters wishing to participate in early voting can go to the East Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters Office at 222 St. Louis Street in Baton Rouge; or go to the Motor Vehicle Building at 2250 Main Street in Baker; the Plaza Building at 10500 Coursey Boulevard, #203 Court, in Baton Rouge; or a satellite office at 3851 Essen Lane in Baton Rouge.
Early voting hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Faulk noted that Central voters first approved the dedicated millage in 2007. At the time, the millage was set at 38.45 mills, but was lowered to 32.50 mills account for business and residential growth in the community. The school district is requesting renewal of the lower 32.50 millage rate.
