Court Orders Student Reinstated at CHS

By  |

District Court Judge Todd Hernandez granted a temporary injunction last Friday requiring that a 14-year-old student be allowed to attend Central High School.  The family of the student hired Baton Rouge attorney Jill Craft to fight the battle to reinstate their daughter, who was taken out of the school system over a dispute of the family’s residency status.
Efforts by the Central School System to ensure that only those students that live in the school district be enrolled in Central’s schools have led to much more stringent scrutiny of residency claims.  The student is reported to have been attending Central schools since the second grade in 2008.
Central School System Superintendent Mike Faulk issued this statement; “Each year the school system experiences an influx of new students. Over the years the board has sought to revise registration procedures and documentation required to insure that the school system is providing educational services to students who legally reside in the boundaries of the Central Community School System.
More and more citizens and employees have expressed concerns to school board members about persons they know or suspect do not reside in the boundaries of the Central Community School System. In response to those concerns the board has stressed to the staff the need to
access all available resources to determine verification of residency.
Additionally, the board continues to look at their policy and make revisions based on situations being experienced and requirements of the law.”
