Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) was recently awarded approval by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to begin offering a Certificate of Technical Studies for Powerplant Mechanic.
Students who complete the program and receive FAA Certification become eligible to obtain their Powerplant rating as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician. The program also serves as a pathway for students to pursue higher-level degrees in the aviation fields.
A full-time commitment is required for students to complete this intensive, year-long program. The program has an anticipated start date of Sept.14.
The curriculum, provided by industry-based instructors, will prepare students to work with aircraft reciprocating and turbine engines, engine components, engine fire protection, fuel, electrical, lubrication, ignition and starting, cooling and exhaust systems.
"Our college is committed to meeting the high-tech, high-demand needs of this industry," said Melvin Cox, Dean for the Division of Transportation Technology at BRCC. "We are ready for our students to take flight into these exciting, high-wage careers."
Serious and motivated students interested in the program are invited to attend an informational session on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the college's Hooper Road location, 10700 Hooper Road in Central, LA.
Attendees will have an opportunity to speak one-on-one with faculty members and staff, take a tour of the facility, and learn about the program and potential career paths. Representatives from Admissions and Financial Aid will also be available.
