DSSHSA Show This Weekend
What do Rice University, being a chef at the Master’s, interning at the British Houses of Parliament, America’s Next Top Model, and scholarships to LSU, Louisiana Tech, OLOL college, and William Carey University have in common? Every single person started with the Deep South Stock Horse Show Association.
For well over 40 years, this Association has been the starting point for many children and teenagers who went on to accomplish amazing things, but for every star story there are thousands of stories of hard work, responsibility, kindness, and sportsmanship. Everyone who comes into contact with this organization cannot help but admire the dedication and hard work of the competitors and their hard working horse show families.
Formed in 1966, Deep South has served as a training ground for thousands of aspiring horsemen. Its twice monthly shows offer both Western Pleasure events such as Trail and Horsemanship and also speed events including Barrel racing and Poles. Children and adults spend many hours refining their riding skills, taking care of their horses and equipment, and pitching in to help with barn chores.
They learn that although winning is fun, it is just as important to know how to lose – congratulating the winners, appreciating their horses, and thanking their families for their support.
These attributes carry over to school and work, hopefully improving our troubled environment by teaching coping skills and the value of hard work.
The Deep South Stock Horse Association has seen many of its members go on to become teachers, home makers, and productive members of society, and yes, every now and again, a television star or a professional chef. No matter the final outcome, it is a valued tool for our community.
