Council Member Washington Switches Parties, Junior Shelton Changes Mind on Mayor’s Race

By  |
On June 17th Central Council Member Ralph Washington, a long time Democrat, filed paperwork with the Registrar of Voters and joined the Republican Party.  He announced the party swap last week along with his statement that he would be seeking a fourth term on the Central City Council, having been appointed to a partial term initially.
In other political news the on-again off-again Mayoral campaign of Junior Shelton was reported last week in a local paper to be on again.  Shelton, who lost the 2010 Mayor’s race to current Mayor Mac Watts, has spent most of the last three years as a stated candidate since immediately after the last election.  Then, in a February 14, 2013 newspaper article Shelton stated that he was no longer a candidate.
In that article Shelton explained that he could not afford to give up his real estate business and support his family on Central’s $55,000 a year Mayoral salary. The article gave no other explanation for the sudden change of mind and his decision to run once again.
