Central High (12-0) fought off a hard charging Catholic High (7-5) on Tuesday (3-26-13) to move on in the LHSAA Bowling State Playoffs and defeating the Bears for the 3rd time this season.  Without a doubt Central’s toughest match of the season came this past Tuesday against the Bears.  Right out the gate the Bears handed Central their first Game 1 loss of the season.  Catholic would throw a season high game of 1089 against Central’s 1045 and take an early 5-3 lead.  Central’s high roller in Game 1 was Bryan Waites (Senior & Captain) with a 209 and was followed by Sarah Leduff (Freshman) with a 195.  But even with that good bowling, Central would have to dig deep to pull off the comeback in Games 2 and 3.

Game 2 saw Catholic up their season high game with an 1109.  Central would respond by throwing their 2nd highest game in school history with an 1172 and even up the score 8-8 with a 5-3 Game 2 win and take the lead in Total Pins by 19 sticks.  The bottom of Central’s line-up would carry the Wildcats in Game 2 with outstanding scores:  Sean Murphy (Junior) with a 233, Jacob Garretson (Sophomore) with a 226 and Waites with a 223.  The stellar Wildcat bowling would set up one of the most exciting finishes in Round 2 of the Baton Rouge area bracket and with both schools’ parents, teachers, coaches, student body and even spectators from other matches cheering the two schools on, excitement doesn’t begin to describe Game 3.  Back and forth the Wildcats and Bears would go, trading strikes and spares throughout the game.  With neither team able to take control of the match, Game 3 would see the two schools split the individual points 3-3.  The Wildcats would finally put the Bears away in Total Pins late in the game by a 1013-968 edge and win Game 3, 5-3.

With the Total Pins bonus (3 points), Central won the match 16-11 (and 3230-3166, another season high for the Bears).  Garretson (Sophomore) led the Wildcats with a 210 in the final game and Murphy chipped in a 199.  Overall, Garretson was high for the Wildcats with a 617 series, followed by Murphy’s 592, Waites’ 589 and Leduff’s 523.  Catholic was led by 2-time District 5A MVP (2012 & 2013) Curtis Westmoland with a 246 game and 658 series and Andres Aguilar rolled a 235/609.

Central’s school record winning streak is now 14 matches and they have won 24 of their last 25 matches.  Central now moves onto Round 3 of the Bi-Regionals this Thursday (4-4-13) at All Star Lanes at 1PM against Baker (7-1).  In Rounds 3 & 4 the Baton Rouge and New Orleans area brackets merge and after reseeding, Central is a 2-seed and Baker is a 7-seed.  If Central is able to defeat Baker, Round 4 will also be on Thursday at 3PM against the winner of #3 Broadmoor (10-1) and #6 Denham Springs (8-4).   As always, Central’s coaches would like to thank all the parents, teachers, students and friends for coming out to support the team this past Tuesday.  The team looks forward to having everyone’s support once again this Thursday at All Star Lanes as they continue their push towards a “Final Four” appearance.
