Central High Varsity Bowling (6-0) proved Monday (2-25-13) that they have arrived and can bowl with the best teams around. Not only did the Wildcats up their winning streak to 6 matches, but they beat their rival Catholic High (3-3) as well.
Central and Catholic would put on a show with all three games seeing multiple lead changes and fans going back and forth with every strike and spare. Right off the bat, Game 1 would set the tone for the entire match. The game would come down to Central’s anchor needing a mark to earn the 2-point series bonus. Jacob Garretson (Sophomore) would come through for the Wildcats and convert a 7-count spare. With those 2 points, Central would take a slim 4.5-3.5 advantage and lead Total Pins by 3. Central was led by Team Captain Bryan Waites (Senior) with a 222. Game 2 would follow the same script as Game 1 and not be decided until the final frame. Catholic fired their 2nd highest game of the season with a 1009, but Central would have just enough in the gas tank to win the game by 15 pins with a 1024 and win Game 2 by a 5-3 margin. Garretson led the team with a 217, followed by Waites’ 199 and Sarah Leduff (Freshman) with a 169. Going into the final game, Central found themselves up 9.5-6.5 and up only 18 pins overall.
With the match still up in the air, Central put the finishing touches on the match with a solid third game. Garretson led the Wildcat attack with a 223, with Sean Murphy (Junior) adding a 195 and Haley Young (Sophomore) chipping in a 152. Central would win 5.5-2.5 and 1018-983 Total Pins. In the end, the Wildcats would win the match by the final score of 18-9 and 3011 to 2958 in Total Pins. Catholic’s 2958 was a season high series for the Bears, but ultimately it wasn’t enough. Overall, Central was led by Garretson with a 601 series, Waites with a 576, Murphy added a 518 and Leduff finished with a 451. Catholic was led by Curtis Westmoland (last year’s 5A District MVP) with scores of 210, 224 and 254 for a 688 series.
With the win Central wraps up a perfect first half of the season and have put themselves in great shape to not only win their first District Championship, but to receive their highest state playoff seed in school history. On Wednesday, Broadmoor (3-1) stunned state powerhouse St. Michael’s (4-1) to leave the door wide open for Central to claim the #1 Seed in the state playoffs for the Baton Rouge area. Baker and Central are the last two undefeated teams in the Baton Rouge area and if both teams were to go undefeated, Central would receive the higher seed due to having a higher team average. But with six matches left, Central’s coaches know they can’t start looking that far ahead. Central goes for 7 in-a-row against Woodlawn (2-4) on Monday (3-4-13) at All Star Lanes (3:20pm). Then on Wednesday (3-6-13) at Circle Bowl (3:20pm), Central bowls Baton Rouge High (0-6). Central defeated both Woodlawn and Baton Rouge High earlier this season by scores of 24-3 and 26-1.
